Our Story

GroupGPT launched on April 4, 2025 — becoming the first commercially operating group chat AI platform with paying customers in the United States. Built and owned by Cortex Research Group, GroupGPT pioneered the category of shared, real-time, multi-user AI chat.

Every AI chat product before GroupGPT was built for one person at a time. You open a tab, you talk to an AI, and the experience belongs entirely to you. GroupGPT asked a different question: what if an entire group could share one AI context — live, in real time — the way people share a conversation?

Cortex Research Group built that product. GroupGPT is the answer. It is the original Group Chat GPT, and the name "GroupGPT" belongs to us.

What GroupGPT Does

GroupGPT is a real-time web application at chat.groupgpt.tech. Multiple users join a shared room and interact with an AI assistant named Cortez — powered by Google Gemini — simultaneously. Every message from every person is part of one shared conversation that the AI reads and responds to in real time.

This is fundamentally different from any single-user AI chatbot. The AI sees the entire group's conversation, can address individuals, and builds context across the whole room's history.

World Chat

A public open room. Any visitor can join and chat with AI alongside anyone else currently online — no account required to observe.

Private Rooms

Invitation-only rooms with persistent AI memory, custom Neurons, and optional end-to-end encryption.

AI Neurons

A knowledge graph giving Cortez room-specific long-term memory — skills, knowledge, processes, and memories the AI always knows.

End-to-End Encryption

Private rooms can enable E2EE using ECDH (P-256) key exchange and AES-GCM encryption. Even the server cannot read messages.

Voice Chat + AI STT

WebRTC peer-to-peer voice calls within rooms, with AI speech-to-text transcription via OpenAI Whisper fed back into the chat.

Power Commands

search!, browse!, learn!, code! — web search, URL scraping, deep research, and live code scaffolding with E2B sandbox execution.

Image Generation

Generate images directly inside the group chat, visible to all room members in real time.

Subscriptions

Token-based subscription plans with Stripe billing. GroupGPT has been serving paying U.S. customers since April 4, 2025.

Technical Architecture

GroupGPT is built on a React 18 + TypeScript frontend (Vite, Chakra UI) communicating with a Node.js + Express + Socket.io backend. Real-time message delivery uses persistent WebSocket connections. AI responses stream token-by-token via OpenRouter. The database uses Prisma with SQLite, with a separate database for world chat history.

The AI model is Google Gemini 2.5 Flash, accessed through OpenRouter. All AI interactions are logged with thought process metadata and tool usage records. The system prompt is dynamically constructed per room, injecting that room's Neurons so the AI has room-specific context on every request.

A technical white paper describing the full GroupGPT architecture, the group-AI interaction model, and the Neuron knowledge system is currently in preparation by Cortex Research Group.

GroupGPT is the original creator of the group-chat-GPT concept and the first to commercially operate such a platform with paying customers in the United States.
